Lithium-Ion Batteries Have Lower Costs
Lithium-Ion batteries(LIB) provide substantial benefits to aircraft when compared to traditional chemistries. Old Nickel Cadmium batteries are the 3rd highest maintenance cost for airlines. LIB’s are up to 50% lighter, with 2-3 times the life, translating into fuel savings, and reduced emissions. In spite of these compelling arguments for adoption, the bulk of the Aerospace Industry has not adopted this technology. Safety, cost, and logistical hurdles have been the primary causes for lack of adoption. Solving these problems takes a system integration approach where the best solutions from chemistry, packaging, and battery management are brought together. Electric Power Systems (EPS) has a solution that overcomes these adoption barriers.

EP Systems was incorporated to give organizational focus on the high growth Energy Storage Systems products for high reliability applications. Adopting Lithium Ion Battery technology is to high-reliability applications is challenging and usually very costly. We have a unique approach that instead of creating an extreme-environment custom design based on high-cost cells, we use Commercial off the Shelf cells and deploy novel Packaging and Control techniques to create a working system. We also have a modular Battery Management System (BMS) that can work with any chemistry. Chemistry solutions come in every shape and flavor you can imagine, and we have years of experience matching cell technology to a variety of applications. Coupling years of experience matching solutions with a modest cost off-the-shelf a low-cost BMS can be quickly adapted a number of unique applications.
