As an industry leader in the field of hybrid-electric and distributed electric propulsion systems, Mike has led efforts in developing lightweight, certifiable battery technologies and innovative battery-based integrated propulsion systems.
Prior to his role at Electric Power Systems, Mike worked as the head of the hybrid propulsion group at Rolls-Royce LibertyWorks. He led propulsion systems integration and design activities for multiple electrified aircraft propulsion programs. Armstrong also worked as the principal investigator on numerous electrified aircraft propulsion systems concept development programs.
Mike actively promotes the aerospace industry’s transition to new propulsion technology solutions through his involvement in SAE’s Electric Aircraft Steering Group and AIAA’s Aircraft Electric Propulsion and Power Working Group.
He has also authored over 25 scholarly publications in the area of systems engineering and aircraft electric propulsion and is an inventor with over 20 filed patents. For his contributions to the field of electrified aircraft propulsion, he was awarded SAE’s Charles M. Manly Memorial Medal and Rolls-Royce’s prestigious Sir Henry Royce Award. He was also featured in the Indianapolis Business Journal’s “40 Under Forty Class of 2016.”
Mike holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Brigham Young University and a master’s and Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
